Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause damage to your plastic IBC totes over time. UV damage can lead to brittleness and potential failure of the tote tank container causing a spill and release of cargo. To combat this potentially negative effect, there are several methods you can employ to protect your IBC from UV damage. Also, it is worth noting that most modern poly IBC tote products, (such as the IBCs we offer) include UV inhibitors compound-fabricated into the plastic during manufacturing to protect the tote against sunlight UV effects.
- Use UV-Resistant IBC Covers: One of the more effective ways to shield your IBC from UV-intense sunlight is to use a UV-resistant cover. Such covers are designed to fit over the IBC to provide a barrier against UV radiation as well as dust, dirt, and moisture.
- Use UV-Stabilized IBCs: When shopping for an IBC tote, if made from plastic, choose a higher-quality IBC product that the manufacturer has blended UV inhibiting agents into the tote plastic during production. While the UV-stabilizers will not last forever and will be used up over time, they protect the IBC’s plastic against sunlight damage for many years and allow the tote to be used for significantly longer compared to an IBC manufactured without UV-stabilizers.
- Apply Paint: Painting your IBC is a simple yet effective way to reduce the amount of UV radiation that reaches and affects the IBC. White paint, in particular, can help reflect more light. Always check and be sure to use paint that is suitable for the polyethylene plastic material IBC totes are made from.
- Use an Insulative Material: Wrapping the IBC in an insulative type material or product (such as from home improvement / hardware stores) can help protect the tote from UV rays.
- DIY Shading Structures: Building a structure over or fully around the IBC tank can provide both shade and reduce UV exposure.
- Specialized UV Hood: Companies and industries can consider using a hardtop spill containment pallet as it provides a full, weatherproof enclosure to keep an IBC tank. While these specialized products are intended for only one IBC, they have a range of useful features ideal for businesses that use IBC totes for harsh chemicals or hazardous materials.
Remember to regularly inspect your IBCs to review their condition, integrity, and suitability for continued work use. If there are signs of degradation such as discoloration or brittleness, it may be time to replace the IBC tote or implement additional protective measures for sunlight protection.
